Emily Arents grew up near Grand Rapids, and first came to Washtenaw County for college. She immediately fell in love with the area, and for most of the time since then has lived within the county borders.
She worked for the Michigan Legislature for nearly 8 years, serving as Legislative Assistant, Legislative Director, then Chief of Staff in different legislative offices. For most of her time in the House of Representatives, Emily worked for Rep. David Rutledge, who represented the Ypsilanti community and the Eastern portion of Washtenaw County. Emily worked on a variety of public policy issues, including public education, municipal finance, tax policy, and economic development. She also assisted with dozens of political campaigns at the federal, state, and local levels.
Emily graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of English. She earned a Master of Public Policy from the UM Ford School and a Master of Social Work from the UM School of Social Work. While in grad school, she taught a criminal justice service-learning class in the UM Department of Psychology.
Emily came to the Sheriff's Office in January 2017. As Director, she oversees the Administrative Operations Division, which includes Human Resources, Business Office, Records, and Service Desk operations.
