  2. Junior Naturalist: Vernal Pools

    May 8, 2021, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM @ Independence Lake County Park

    Vernal pool life abounds in spring. We will use dip nets to examine tiny ephemeral creatures from frogs to fairy shrimp, and learn to identify the aquatic dwellers of these remarkable ecosystems hidden beneath the smooth water of leafy, woodland pools. Please wear boots that can get wet and muddy. Led by Elle Bogle. Program limited to 5 children per section with one caregiver; no unregistered siblings please.   3. Stewardship Basics

    This Intro to Stewardship will teach the basics of common plant identification, what makes a plant invasive, and what to do about it. It will be a combination of instruction and volunteer work and is intended for those new to volunteering. Be prepared to be outdoors for the duration of the event and some hiking off-trail.     The magic of birds is they seem to be everywhere you go. Local parks, backyards, apartment balcony railings, quiet forests, and city streets. Birding can be enjoyed just about anywhere, but with so many species it can seem like a daunting hobby. Join Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring, to learn tricks to identifying birds based on habitat, markings, and sounds. We’ll also discuss what to look for in binoculars. No equipment needed. We will have basic binoculars for you to use. This program is intended for people brand new to birding. Space is limited to 10 birders. Email Kelsey at [email protected] to register.

    Join us the second Saturday of every month to help the environment and explore new places. This month’s workday is a part of Huron River Day, Every Day. We will remove invasive plants in the floodplain of both Fleming Creek and the Huron River to improve the habitat for native plants and animals.
