Learn how to build a campfire with only materials you find in nature. Fire lays, tinder bundles and kindling will all be demonstrated and practiced. Learn the rule of 3’s and how they relate to fires and forts. Then enjoy a peaceful afternoon learning and implementing primitive skills like debris hut building. Meet at the beach pavilion. Join naturalist Faye Stoner on a hike through the fields and forests to the shoreline of West Lake. Explore these different habitats and observe the creatures and plants residing and utilizing the landscape. Hike will cover 1-2 miles of trails, please come prepared by bringing water and wearing sturdy shoes.

Refresh your soul and raise your spirits as we follow the October scent trail at County Farm Park, where plants, fruits, roots and trees that shape the autumn scentscape are waiting to be discovered. Follow your nose and learn how to describe smells in nature using “scent mapping” a sensory evaluation technique used by perfumers. Experience natural essences used in fine fragrance that echo the honeyed amberesque redolence of fall. Seasonal tastes on the sensory menu may include: American persimmon, autumn olive jam, black walnuts, Mohawk red corn, Osmanthus tea, birch bark syrup, and possibly other surprises, Mother Nature permitting - limited to 24 attendees per day - Event geared towards adults.
