Winter’s chill brings white snow and brown leaves, but still there are flashes of color and signs of life. On this hike we will search for Nature’s warmest color – red! From the fur of a Fox to rosy cheeks around a campfire, how many red nature wonders can we find? Dress warmly! Hike led by Shawn Severance. For ages 2 – 4. We'll meet at the Perennial Garden. Come enjoy the park after the sun goes down. All hikes begin at the Beach Center Meeting Room and finish near a bon fire with hot cocoa. Various actives included, based on monthly theme. Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra was the first act to ever grace the stage of the Paradise Theatre on December 26, 1941. Bassist Rodney Whitaker, who performed on the inaugural Paradise Jazz Series concert in 1999, leads a top-notch ensemble to pay homage to Satchmo! Whitaker will be joined by trumpeter Marcus Printup, pianist Eric Reed, drummer Herlin Riley, saxophonist Victor Goines, trombonist Vincent Gardner, and vocalists Rockelle Fortin and Chris McDole.
Also on this double bill: Chilean-born singer, guitarist, and composer Camila Meza and her band join forces with a DSO string quartet to perform Meza's original music.

Winter Stonefly Search, - Saturday, January 25, 2020, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM hosted by Friends of the Rouge.
Volunteers needed to help look for sensitive aquatic insects that indicate good water quality! No prior experience is necessary but PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED BY JANUARY 10. Dress for the weather. Minors must be accompanied by a participating adult. Groups larger than six must be split up. Must have own transportation to sampling sites (carpooling encouraged).
Volunteers are pre-assigned to teams that each travel to two stream sites where they pick through samples collected from the stream by team leaders. Optional "Stonefly Refresher" course will be held on Jan. 11 from 10 am - 12 pm at PARC.

The varying habitats of Leonard Preserve are a perfect way to take in the beauty of winter. We’ll explore along the river, fields, and forests practicing our tree ID and hopefully finding animal signs! Hike led by Kelsey Dehring.

On the very coldest days, animals must take shelter from the wind and chill to survive. Who is up in a tree? Who else is down under the ground? Learn about winter homes and other winter survival strategies. Dress for the outdoors! Optional campfire with s’mores after the hike from 3:00-3:30. Hike led by Shawn Severance.
