Ten cases of cryptosporidiosis (“Crypto”) have been diagnosed in the past month in individuals who swim in area pools. Most of the pool exposures have occurred on University of Michigan campus. However, possible exposures could have also occurred in other area pools including Pioneer High School, Skyline High School, and Mack Indoor Pool. These pools have been notified and the water has been treated.
Anyone swimming in these pools on the dates listed below should watch for symptoms consistent with Crypto. Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. If you have symptoms, seek medical care and ask for Crypto testing. Anyone ill with Crypto should not swim in public pools for two weeks after symptoms are gone.
- Pioneer High School Pool: Sept 30 through Oct 16
- Skyline High School Pool: Sept 30 through Oct 17
- Mack Indoor Pool: Oct 2 through Oct 11
Crypto is a parasite that causes diarrhea and other gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. It can survive in standard pool chlorine in pools for days. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says anyone diagnosed with Crypto must stay out of swimming pools for two weeks after symptoms end since they can continue to shed the organism.
