WASHTENAW COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
PUBLIC NOTICE – DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BOARD APPOINTMENTS
The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners is looking for citizens to volunteer for a slate of positions on various Boards, Committees and Commissions. The Board of Commissioners will make these appointments at its upcoming session on November 20, 2019 at 6:45 p.m. in the Board Room, Administration Building, 220 North Main Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Individuals interested in applying should submit a letter of interest and resume, including a home address, to the Washtenaw County Clerk’s office, Attention: Appointments, P.O. Box 8645, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48107. Those resumes received by NOVEMBER 5, 2019 will be submitted to the Board of Commissioners for its consideration on November 20, 2019. The appointments will become effective January 1, 2020. These appointments include:
Agricultural Lands Preservation Advisory Committee – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions, one representing Agricultural Production/Operator Agricultural Business and one representing the General Public three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022. The purpose of the Agricultural Lands Preservation Advisory Committee is to assist the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners in determining whether it should purchase the development rights on a particular parcel as well as how much the County should pay for those rights according to the Washtenaw County Purchase of Development Rights Ordinance.
Area Agency on Aging Executive Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position representing County Older Person, for a one-year term expiring December 31, 2021. The Area Agency on Aging Executive Board assesses the needs of older county residents and develops plans to provide assistance that addresses those identified needs.
Board of Health – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill three (3) positions for terms expiring December 31, 2022. The Board of Health is responsible for developing and overseeing a strategic plan for the Health Department; recommending an annual budget to the Board of Commissioners; and, in cooperation with the County Administrator, regularly evaluating the performance of the Washtenaw County Public Health Officer.
Brownfield Redevelopment Authority – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position representing the general public for a three-year term expiring December 31, 2022. The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority was established in 1999 in conformity with Act 381 of 1996, as amended. The purpose of this Authority is to facilitate the redevelopment of previously developed sites, consistent with the community’s commitment to sustainability and its vision for the future.
Community Action Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions representing the Consumer Sector for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022. Prospective candidates for the Consumer Sector of the CAB should complete the attached application and return it to the location listed above with the other requested documents. Members of the Consumer Sector shall be representative of low-income individuals and families in Washtenaw County neighborhoods. The Community Action Board was established in 1990 for the purpose of working toward eliminating and preventing the causes of, and alleviating the effects of poverty in Washtenaw County. The Board consists of 15-16 members who represent three sectors: Consumer (5-6 positions), Private Sector (5 positions), and Public Sector (5 positions).
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Commission – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position representing the General Public (as an Alternate) for the remainder of a three-year term expiring December 31, 2020. The Commission conducts public hearings relating to EMS matters when deemed necessary; promulgates and administrates regulations pursuant to Washtenaw County’s EMS standards; plans, monitors, and evaluates the EMS system in concert with the Washtenaw-Livingston Medical Control Authority Board; and plans, monitors, and evaluates the pre-hospital aspects of the Washtenaw County Emergency Action Guidelines.
Historic District Commission – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions representing the General Public for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022. The Commission ensures that efforts are made to safeguard the heritage of Washtenaw County by identifying and preserving sites, structures, objects and other resources of historical, cultural, archaeological, economic, political, or architectural significance. The Commission seeks to promote the establishment and use of historic districts, markers and other programs for the education, pleasure and welfare of the people of this county. Individuals who have demonstrated their interest in Washtenaw County's history and their ability to render valuable services in historical and civic matters, especially representatives of educational and civic organizations, are invited to apply.
Local Emergency Planning Committee – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill 19 positions representing the following: Law Enforcement (1); Local Environment (2); Elected State (1); Elected Local (1); Owner/Operator of Title III Facility (2); Agricultural (1); Agricultural (Farm Bureau) (1); Broadcast Media (1); and Education (1); Hospitals (3); First Aid (1); Firefighter (1); Health (1); Transportation (1); and Civil Defense/Emergency Management (1), all for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022 EXCEPT: Law Enforcement (2); Local Environment (1); Elected State (1); Elected Local (1); Owner/Operator of Title III Facility (2); Agricultural (1); Agricultural (Farm Bureau) (1); and Broadcast Media (1), which are all for the remainder of three-year terms expiring December 31, 2020. The Local Emergency Planning Committee was established in 1986, to serve as an emergency planning district under Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. The purpose of this committee is to report on hazardous and toxic chemicals in the community as it pertains to the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986. The committee meets on a quarterly basis.
Parks and Recreation Commission – The Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill two (2) positions representing the general public for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022. The Parks and Recreation Commission was established in 1965 in conformity with Michigan Public Act 261 of 1965. The purpose of the Commission is to acquire, develop, operate and maintain land and recreational facilities, activities and programs not generally available or adequately provided. The Commission also plays a key role in countywide land preservation and stewardship efforts; the protection of sensitive ecosystems; environmental education; and the development of a non-motorized trail network linking communities, parks, and activity centers.
Natural Areas Technical Advisory Committee – The Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill three (3) positions as follows: one (1) representing Land Trust/Conservation, one (1) representing Professional Real Estate or Development Practice; and one (1) representing Environmental Education, all for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Natural Areas Technical Advisory Committee was established as an advisory body to assist the Parks and Recreation Commission in prioritizing natural areas nominated by property owners for the Washtenaw County Natural Areas Preservation Program. Applicants must be residents of Washtenaw County.
Public Works Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions representing the general public for three-year terms expiring on December 31, 2022. The Public Works Board was established in accordance with MCLA 123.732 and focuses on assisting local communities within Washtenaw County in addressing environmental and public health issues and development needs, including wastewater disposal and collection, water treatment and supply, lake management, and solid waste and recycling management.
Regional Transit Authority - The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position for a three-year term expiring March 31, 2023. The purpose of the RTA is to plan for and coordinate public transportation in the four-county region, including the City of Detroit, and to deliver rapid transit in a region where none exists. It is the entity through which transit providers must apply for state and federal funds, and through which those funds are allocated to providers. The RTA is also responsible for developing a Regional Master Transit Plan to guide present and future service and is empowered to put funding questions on the ballot for public vote.
River Raisin Watershed Council – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions as follows: one BOC appointment and one Alternate representative, both for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Council was established in 1994 to promote cooperation among local units of government in river management.
Social Services Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position for a three-year term expiring December 31, 2022. The agency is committed to assisting its clients in breaking the cycle of welfare dependency to become self-sufficient members of the community.
Washtenaw County Food Policy Council – The Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill six (6) positions to serve in the following sectors: Waste Management, Rural Agriculture, Nutrition, Planning, Health Care, Community Representative, Economic Development, Public Health, Human Services, Funding, Labor, and Transportation, all for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. Council members must be available to attend meetings on a Wednesday of the odd months (typically the second Wednesday of the odd months) from 9-11AM, must attend 2 outreach events per calendar year, participate in a committee and/or a Policy Action Team, and must live or work in Washtenaw County. The Food Policy Council was established in 2012 to develop a healthy community and thriving local food system. When writing a letter of interest, indicate which sector you are applying for.
Washtenaw County/City of Ann Arbor Community Corrections Advisory Board - The Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill four (4) positions representing the following: Communications Media (1); General Public (1); Business Community (1); and Service Area (1) all for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2022. The purposes of the CCAB is to serve as a regional board in evaluating, identifying and developing community corrections programs, address criminal justice issues, take other action deemed appropriate and necessary in this arena, and develop a regional comprehensive community corrections plan and apply for funding to the Office of Community Corrections to finance and implement the plan.
Washtenaw County Veterans Affairs Committee - The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions representing Veterans for four-year terms expiring December 31, 2023.The five members of the WCVAC must be residents of Washtenaw County who have served honorably on active duty in the United States armed forces. Each committee member appointed shall have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in public service, business, or finance.
