[ARCHIVED] Waste Reduction and Recycling Award: Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority

Excellence in Waste Reduction and Recycling - Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority

Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority formed in 1991 as partnership between the 5 communities of Dexter, Lyndon, Bridgewater, Manchester, Lyma and the City of Chelsea. These municipalities are working together to find ways to handle waste and promote recycling!

Currently they are the only operating single stream Materials Recycling Facility in the county. Currently product sales are 550 tons per month. This product is exceptionally clean, and the mixed plastic loads are being sold reducing in the landfill cost and space. WWRA also collects and processes compost.

When the market for glass recycling slowly dwindled WWRA had to eliminate the collection and recycling of the product. With some hard work and determination WWRA secured a vendor that would purchase glass for recycling. A giant leap for WWRA to keep that product out of the landfill.

Western Washtenaw Recycling Authority works to collect materials, process them, and keep community members informed so residents can do their part to make a difference.
