[ARCHIVED] From the Commission

Independence Lake Beach

This year marks that 45th anniversary of the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC) and begins a new era with talented new leadership.  After a long career as Director, Robert (Bob) Tetens retired in summer 2017.  For sixteen years, Bob served the citizens of the County with dedication, creativity, and a commitment to having the one of the best county park systems in Michigan.

Among the many initiatives undertaken during Bob’s leadership were development of the Border-to-Border Trail (B2B), implementation of the Natural Areas Preservation Program, and expansion of Rolling Hills County Park. Those of us who live in Washtenaw County and use its parks, trails, and recreational facilities, and who recognize the value of these amenities, owe Bob Tetens our sincere gratitude for his years of service.

Coy Vaughn, who successfully served as the department’s Deputy, and Interim Director, was recently promoted to Director.  At the unanimous recommendation of the Parks and Recreation Commission, his appointment was officially approved by the County Board of Commissioners in December 2017.  Coy’s vision for the future of parks, recreation, and open space, and their accessibility to all county residents, convinced the Parks and Recreation Commissioners that his leadership will be essential in the years ahead.  We welcome Coy as the department’s fifth Director.

WCPARC is also delighted to welcome back Meghan Bonfiglio as Deputy Director.  From 2012-2015, Meghan served as the Commission’s Superintendent of Park Planning and Natural Areas.  She subsequently left to assume the role of Chief Deputy in the County’s Office of the Water Resources Commissioner.  Although her background in environmental policy was well-suited for that position, her passion for parks and open space could not keep her away.  Her experiences with water resources will serve us well as our Deputy Director.

We are excited about the future and proud of our past accomplishments and commit to providing quality recreation opportunities for Washtenaw County residents!

~ Robert W. Marans, President of the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission
