WASHTENAW COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
PUBLIC NOTICE – DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR BOARD APPOINTMENTS
The Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners is looking for citizens to volunteer for a slate of positions on various Boards, Committees and Commissions. The Board of Commissioners will make these appointments at its upcoming session on November 28, 2018 at 6:45 p.m. in the Board Room, Administration Building, 220 North Main Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Individuals interested in applying should submit a letter of interest and resume, including a home address, to the Washtenaw County Clerk’s office, Attention: Appointments, P.O. Those resumes received by NOVEMBER 19, 2018 will be submitted to the Board of Commissioners for its consideration on November 28, 2018. The appointments will become effective January 1, 2019. These appointments include:
800 MHz Project Oversight Committee (Emergency Communications Millage POC) – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions (1 representing Fire Departments and 1 representing Huron Valley Ambulance or HVA) for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The 800 MHz Oversight Committee exists acts a governance structure to oversee the expenditure of the 800 MHz millage funds to insure the upgraded communication capacity envisioned by the millage is completed in an economical and timely fashion.
Agricultural Lands Preservation Advisory Committee – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions, one representing Real Estate Development Interest and one representing Agricultural Production/Operator Agricultural Business for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The purpose of the Agricultural Lands Preservation Advisory Committee is to assist the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners in determining whether it should purchase the development rights on a particular parcel as well as how much the County should pay for those rights according to the Washtenaw County Purchase of Development Rights Ordinance.
Area Agency on Aging Executive Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position representing County Older Person, for a one-year term expiring December 31, 2019. The Area Agency on Aging Executive Board assesses the needs of older county residents and develops plans to provide assistance that addresses those identified needs.
Board of Health – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill three (3) positions for terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Board of Health is responsible for developing and overseeing a strategic plan for the Health Department; recommending an annual budget to the Board of Commissioners; and, in cooperation with the County Administrator, regularly evaluating the performance of the Washtenaw County Public Health Officer.
Brownfield Redevelopment Authority – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill three (3) positions representing the general public for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority was established in 1999 in conformity with Act 381 of 1996, as amended. The purpose of this Authority is to facilitate the redevelopment of previously developed sites, consistent with the community’s commitment to sustainability and its vision for the future.
Building Code/Construction Board of Appeals. The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill seven (7) positions as follows: one (1) position representing architect; two (2) positions representing Building trades; one (1) position representing the Plumbing trade; one (1) position representing the Mechanical or Plumbing trade; one (1) position representing the Electrical trade; and one (1) position representing the Engineering trade, for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2020. The Building Code/Construction Appeals Board was established in 1974. A member of the Board of Appeals should be qualified by experience or training to perform the duties of members of the Board of Appeals.
Community Action Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill seven (7) positions: one (1) representing the Public Sector, four (4) representing the Private Sector, and two (2) representing the Consumer Sector, all for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Community Action Board was established in 1990 for the purpose of working toward eliminating and preventing the causes of, and alleviating the effects of poverty in Washtenaw County. The Board consists of 15-16 members who represent three sectors: Consumer (5-6 positions), Private Sector (5 positions), and Public Sector (5 positions).
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Commission – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill four (4) positions representing the General Public, for the remainder of three-year terms expiring December 31, 2020. The Commission conducts public hearings relating to EMS matters when deemed necessary; promulgates and administrates regulations pursuant to Washtenaw County’s EMS standards; plans, monitors, and evaluates the EMS system in concert with the Washtenaw-Livingston Medical Control Authority Board; and plans, monitors, and evaluates the pre-hospital aspects of the Washtenaw County Emergency Action Guidelines.
Historic District Commission – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill three (3) positions; two representing the General Public and one representing Attorney, all for three-year terms expiring December 31, 2021. The Commission ensures that efforts are made to safeguard the heritage of Washtenaw County by identifying and preserving sites, structures, objects and other resources of historical, cultural, archaeological, economic, political, or architectural significance. The Commission seeks to promote the establishment and use of historic districts, markers and other programs for the education, pleasure and welfare of the people of this county. Individuals who have demonstrated their interest in Washtenaw County's history and their ability to render valuable services in historical and civic matters, especially representatives of educational and civic organizations, are invited to apply.
Huron River Watershed Council – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill four (4) positions total, two (2) representing Washtenaw County members and two (2) representing Washtenaw County alternate members, all for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2020. The Huron River Watershed Council is a collection of representatives from local governments within the watershed, working together to protect and restore the Huron River and its tributaries.
Local Emergency Planning Committee – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill 14 positions representing the following: Law Enforcement (1); Local Environment (3); Elected State (1); Elected Local (1); Owner/Operator of Title III Facility (2); Agricultural (1); Agricultural (Farm Bureau) (1); Broadcast Media (1); Community Groups (1); American Red Cross (1); and Education (1), with all for the remainder of three-year terms expiring December 31, 2020 EXCEPT: Community Groups – remainder of a term expiring December 31, 2019; and one (1) Local Environment – three-year term expiring December 31, 2021. The Local Emergency Planning Committee was established in 1986, to serve as an emergency planning district under Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986. The purpose of this committee is to report on hazardous and toxic chemicals in the community as it pertains to the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986. The committee meets on a quarterly basis.
Natural Areas Technical Advisory Committee – The Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill four (4) positions as follows: one (1) representing Fisheries Biology/Aquatic Ecology, one (1) representing Botany/Forestry; one (1) representing Wildlife Management; and one (1) representing Professional Land Use Planning, all for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2020. The Natural Areas Technical Advisory Committee was established as an advisory body to assist the Parks and Recreation Commission in prioritizing natural areas nominated by property owners for the Washtenaw County Natural Areas Preservation Program. Applicants must be residents of Washtenaw County.
Public Works Board – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill two (2) positions representing the general public for three-year terms expiring on December 31, 2021. The Public Works Board was established in accordance with MCLA 123.732 and focuses on assisting local communities within Washtenaw County in addressing environmental and public health issues and development needs, including wastewater disposal and collection, water treatment and supply, lake management, and solid waste and recycling management.
Road Commission – The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position for a six-year term expiring December 31, 2024. The Road Commission is responsible for maintaining certain County roadways. Individuals interested in appointment to the Washtenaw County Road Commission should have experience managing organizations, understanding and respect for labor unions and the bargaining process, be knowledgeable about the Washtenaw County Road Commission, possess strong leadership and communication skills, have excellent customer service skills, value employees and be committed to serving out the remainder of this term.
Washtenaw County Food Policy Council – The Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill nine (9) positions to serve in the following sectors: Community Representative, Economic Development, Emergency Food System, Food Manufacturer & Distributor, Food Retail, Food Service, Public Health, Human Services, Faith-Based Organization, Funding, Labor, Transportation, Urban Agriculture, and Education, all for two-year terms expiring December 31, 2020 (except one for the remainder of a term expiring December 31, 2019). Council members must be available to attend meetings on a Monday of the odd months from 3-5PM, must attend 2 outreach events per calendar year, and participate in a committee and/or a Policy Action Team. The Food Policy Council was established in 2012 to develop a healthy community and thriving local food system. When writing a letter of interest, indicate which sector you are applying for.
Washtenaw County Substance Use Disorders Oversight Policy Board – The Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill one (1) position representing the General Public for the remainder of a three-year term expiring September 30, 2021. Any combination of County Commissioners or others are eligible, as allowed by Michigan law, that the BOC deems best represents the interests of the County. The remaining two members from each county are appointed by the Regional Board with recommendations forwarded by each respective community mental health board. The SUD Oversight Policy Board (OPB) membership must include at least one individual from each county who is or has been directly served by SUD prevention, treatment, and/or recovery programs. All representatives shall serve three-year terms, starting October 1, of the year appointed. Appointments shall be effective upon approval of the respective organization. All reappointments shall be made by the respective appointing organization.
Washtenaw County/City of Ann Arbor Community Corrections Advisory Board - The Board of Commissioners is seeking qualified applicants to fill one (1) position representing Communications Media for the remainder of a three-year term expiring December 31, 2019. The purposes of the CCAB is to serve as a regional board in evaluating, identifying and developing community corrections programs, address criminal justice issues, take other action deemed appropriate and necessary in this arena, and develop a regional comprehensive community corrections plan and apply for funding to the Office of Community Corrections to finance and implement the plan.
Washtenaw County Veterans Affairs Committee The Board of Commissioners is looking to fill one (1) position representing Veterans for a four-year term expiring December 31, 2022.The five members of the WCVAC must be residents of Washtenaw County who have served honorably on active duty in the United States armed forces. Each committee member appointed shall have demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in public service, business, or finance.
