WCPARC 2023 Annual Report

WCPARC 2023 Annual Report Cover Goldenrod at West Lake Preserve

This year, the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission celebrated 50 years of providing outstanding programs and amenities to the community. What started with five roadside parks and undeveloped land in Lyndon Township has grown to a nationally recognized park system offering a wide range of opportunities. We celebrated this milestone with several promotions, programs, and special events.

We continue to build upon this legacy. Participation at Pierce Lake Golf Course continues to see renewed interest after the pandemic. There have also been expanded and new programs at our other facilities to meet broad community interests, such as the inaugural Craft Show at Independence Lake County Park. Planning staff have been investing significant time and resources to construct the Commission’s major initiative, the Border to Border Trail. This Annual Report highlights a handful of this year’s accomplishments, including:

  • Nature education
  • Youth summer camps
  • Staebler Farm County Park development
  • Infrastructure investment
  • Key NAPP acquisitions
  • Volunteer program expansion

As we look to the next fifty years, we want to ensure that we can continue to support the community’s recreation needs. This fall, we engaged a team from PROS Consulting to develop our first Comprehensive Master Plan. The process includes updating the current five-year recreation plan, as well as developing a new strategic plan to guide the direction of the organization. This component will help ensure our long-term stability by evaluating the organizational structure, funding mechanisms, and employee needs. The planning team has already held several public meetings and will continue to provide opportunities for feedback. A dedicated website will be available for updates and input throughout the process, which is expected to conclude in the fall of 2024. For more information, visit

We look forward to seeing you at our parks over the next fifty years!
