Lowering of Portage and Base Line Lakes

Lake Level Change Begins November 22, 2022

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI - The lake level at Portage and Base Line lakes will be lowered beginning on November 22, 2022. The lake level was legally established in 1949 to reduce ice damage and erosion to the shoreline.  The legally established winter lake level range is between 850.04 feet and 850.29 feet above sea level. The lakes will reach the winter range by December 5, 2022, weather conditions permitting, according to Scott Miller, P.E., Deputy Water Resources Commissioner.

Portage and Base Line lakes are located in Dexter and Webster Townships. The Lake Level District includes lands in both Washtenaw and Livingston County. For further information, please contact the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office at 734-222-6860.

The mission of the Office of the Water Resources Commissioner is to provide for the health, safety and welfare of Washtenaw County citizens and the protection of surface water and the environment and to promote the long term environmental and economic sustainability of Washtenaw County by providing storm water management, flood control, development review and water quality programs.
