This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first 9-1-1 call made in the United States. The public safety telecommunicators of Washtenaw Metro Dispatch are responsible for receiving all of the emergency calls and dispatching law enforcement personnel for the City of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti City, Northfield Township, Pittsfield Township, Michigan State Police, Department of Natural Resources, Huron Metro Parks and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
Washtenaw Metro Dispatch received over 155,000 calls for emergency assistance from the citizens and visitors of Washtenaw County in 2017. Public safety telecommunicators are the single most vital link for law enforcement responders by coordinating responding units, monitoring activities by radio, and providing responders with critical information to ensure their safety.
They have mastered a wide array of advanced technologies in the performance of these duties including Computer Aided Dispatch, Enhanced 9-1-1, 800 MHz radio, and Law Enforcement Information systems.
Public safety telecommunicators of Washtenaw Metro Dispatch have contributed substantially to the apprehension of criminals, suppression of fires, rescue of trapped victims and treatment of injured or ill patients.
