3rd Annual Juneteenth Ceremony and Flag Raising

Tuesday, June 20, 2023

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, Washtenaw County Administration will celebrate its 3rd Annual Juneteenth Observance with a flag raising ceremony and short program. At their June 7th meeting, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners passed a proclamation to recognize “…Juneteenth as a day of celebration and recognition to honor the physical freedom of enslaved people in America.” County offices will be closed on Monday, June 19th in observance of the federal holiday.

This year’s theme is “Facing the Rising Sun”. The program will feature Beverly Willis, historian and Co-Chair of Exhibits for the African American Cultural and History Museum. County Commissioners, area youth and faith leaders will also participate in the ceremony. The event begins at 10:00 am, EST and will take place in the atrium of 220 N. Main, followed by raising of the Juneteenth flag (pictured) at the flagpole in front of 200 N. Main St. in Ann Arbor. The annual Juneteenth program celebrates the day that word of emancipation reached enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, TX in 1865, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Juneteenth Flag Raising and Ceremony is open to the public and will include light refreshments.
