Residents of Washtenaw County can receive homebuyer education and may be eligible for down payment assistance to help with the costs of purchasing their first home. Homeownership assistance programs are open to households currently living in Washtenaw County and purchasing a home in Washtenaw County.
Washtenaw Housing Education Partners (WHEP) are committed to providing high-quality housing education for current, future and former Washtenaw County homeowners. Through our partnership with seven local non-profit agencies and county government departments, we provide education and counseling.
WHEP provides numerous classes to the public throughout the year on topics including homebuyer education, money management, home maintenance, options in foreclosure and more. WHEP members provide housing education and counseling according to Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) and Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) guidelines. Housing counselors in WHEP may be certified by one or both of these agencies. Participating WHEP realtors attend a two-hour training session annually with a WHEP-member organization and have agreed to the WHEP Ethics Agreement. WHEP lenders must attend a course annually and are approved through a "Request for Qualifications" process.
