Firearm violence is a serious public health issue.

In 2020, gun violence became the leading cause of death for children for the first time in Michigan and in the U.S. This increase in firearm deaths is also happening here in Washtenaw County.

Local actions

  • Washtenaw County Health Department staff serve on the county's Community Violence Intervention Team. See the team's policy recommendations here or learn more about the team here
  • The Washtenaw County Board of Health passed a "Resolution Confirming Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue in Support of the Community Violence Intervention Team Recommendations" on March 24, 2023.
