Bow Echo Thunderstorm of July 26, 2023

On July 26, 2023, a Severe Thunderstorm struck southeast Michigan, causing widespread power outages and very hazardous conditions. Downed trees and power lines resulted in nearly 30,000 DTE customers in Washtenaw County to lose power, along with streetlights and traffic signals at many busy intersections. 4 days later, DTE’s outage map still showed some 1,165 customers without power in the county. Because of the projected 80 MPH winds the Emergency Operations Center activated the county’s 89 outdoor warning sirens according to protocol. Due to a power interruption at Ann Arbor City’s Barton Pond pumping station, Ann Arbor and Scio Township residents were asked to temporarily restrict their water usage in order to conserve the city’s water storage capacity. Heavy rains caused locally flooded roadways and a lightning strike on a home in Pittsfield Township caused some $20k damage. According to the National Weather Service, the Ann Arbor and Grosse Point areas were hit the hardest.
