Continuing Legal Education (CLE)

Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) Standard 1 requires all attorneys to complete a minimum of 12 hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) in every calendar year. Attorneys with fewer than two (2) years of experience practicing criminal defense in Michigan must complete one basic skills acquisition class; this is a requirement for all attorneys joining the Washtenaw County Assigned Counsel Roster List.

All MIDC offered trainings count towards the 12-hour requirement under this Standard 1. Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan (CDAM) provides a two (2) day skills training course called Skills Training 101. This course is a hands-on, small group setting covering a variety of topics. Attorneys who complete this course will earn sixteen (16) hours that are approved by MIDC.

Failure to complete CLE training may result in temporary suspension from the Assigned Counsel Roster.

Attorneys can request reimbursement in writing for CLE training up to 360 dollars per calendar year. Attorneys must provide receipt of both payment and completion. Additional information may be requested as needed.

Attorney compensation is under the discretion of the MAC Division.
