  • Do I have to have experience?
    • Nope. For most positions, we pay you to train!
      • Corrections Officer (paid Corrections Academy, paid field training program).
      • Community Service Officer (paid field training program).
      • Communications Operator (paid Dispatch Academy, paid field training program).
      • Part-Time Court Services Liaison (paid training).
      • Part-Time Drug Testing Agent (paid training).
      • Part-Time Court Security Officer (paid training; two years of public safety experience or retired law enforcement required)
    • MCOLES Certification required for Deputy Sheriff position.
  • Will you pay for me to go back to school?
    • Full-time employees are eligible for 100% tuition reimbursement after a year of service with WCSO.
    • Also: If you have at least 60 credits or an associate’s degree, you start at a higher rate of pay.
  • Do you give preference to veterans?
    • We love veterans! We have a number of staff who are veterans or currently serve as reservists.
    • If you have at least two years of military experience, you start at a higher rate of pay.

  • Do I have to live in Washtenaw County?
    • You don’t need to live within the county limits, but you must reside within 50 miles of Station 1 (2201 Hogback Road, Service Center location).
  • What firearms are permitted?
    • Glocks are required as the primary weapon for WCSO staff carrying under the Sheriff’s authority. However, there are multiple models that are authorized for carry: Glock 17, Glock 19, and 34.  Additional approved models are 21 (.45 caliber), 22 (.40), 23, (.40), 30 (.45), and 35 (.40).   • What shifts are you on?
    • Deputy Sheriff: Hybrid (12-hour shifts and 8-hour shifts). Varies by location; location bid by seniority on yearly basis.
    • Corrections Officer, Community Service Officer, Communications Operator: 8-hour shifts.
    • Part-time positions: hours vary by position.
