If you are a veteran residing in Washtenaw County you may file a copy of your military discharge papers (DD214) at the Washtenaw County Clerk/Register Vital Records office for secure, permanent storage.
Military discharge papers are important and may be needed to obtain veterans’ benefits.
How:
Appear in-person with your original discharge papers, which will be immediately returned to you. Military discharges are kept confidential and are not allowed to be viewed by the public.

Obtain a Certified Copy of Military Discharge Papers (DD214)
Certified copies of military discharge paperwork on file at the Washtenaw County Clerk/Register Vital Records office are provided for free to the veteran named on the record and their immediate family or spouse. Only papers that were previously placed on file at this office are available. If the record is not on file at this office, see here for more information.

- Please note that while the county record request fee is waived for the 1st copy of a record ordered by the veteran named on the record and their immediate family or spouse, service fees are still charged for orders placed online.
- The requester must submit a copy of their identification during the order. An immediate family member or spouse may request a copy of a military discharge only with a certified copy of a death certificate and proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage license) and valid driver’s license or state ID.
Request In-person:
- You must provide your valid identification at the time of the order. Request By Mail:
- You must print, complete, and mail this request form. Please do not forget to sign the form.
- You must mail a copy of your valid driver license, state-issued ID, US Passport, or Washtenaw County ID Card. An immediate family member or spouse may request a copy of a military discharge only with a certified copy of a death certificate and proof of relationship (birth certificate, marriage license) and valid identification.
