Home Toxics (Paint, Oil, Pesticides & More)
The Home Toxics Center is Washtenaw County’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program.
To use our program, you must be a Washtenaw County resident and the items you are bringing must not have been used for a business purpose (with an exception for fertilizers and pesticides).
There are two options for accessing the program:
- Weekday Drop-Offs - Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., closed on holidays. See below for details.
- Saturday Collection Events - Select Saturdays, April-November, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. May Saturdays: May 1st, 8th, and 15th.
Closures are posted on our Facebook page, follow us for up-to-date information.
New Safety Procedures:
- Please wear a mask to help us ensure the safety of our staff and their loved ones. Otherwise, remain in your vehicle.
- To make a cash or check donation, our waste specialists can provide an envelope to drop off at the front of the building.
- Proceed directly to the back of the building, do not go into the building.
Weekday Drop-Off Appointments
Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., closed on holidays.
Book your weekday appointment through the button below.
We can currently accommodate weekday drop-offs without appointments only for small loads of material, such as less than two boxes full (see left for size reference) or less than 10 gallons of paint. Larger loads will be turned away and required to make an appointment. If you have an appointment, or are arriving on a Saturday, this limit does not apply. Appointments are strongly encouraged to assist us in staff scheduling and workload on weekdays.
An appointment guarantees staff are available to take your items, makes you our priority, and improves our efficiency. Unscheduled drop-offs (walk-ins) will need to wait for staff assistance while residents with appointments are being helped.
Due to high volumes and staff limitations we reserve the right to turn away residents without appointments on weekdays. To ensure you don’t make a trip when we can’t serve you, we highly recommend calling prior to showing up at: 734-222-3950.

Saturday Collection Events
Events are held the first three Saturdays of the month, April through November, 9 a.m. to noon, except for holiday weekends.
Check our calendar (on the right if viewing from a desktop and at the bottom of the page if viewing on a mobile device) for up-to-date information. No appointments needed for Saturday Collection Events. If you are bringing more items than can fit in a truck bed, please call our hotline to schedule a weekday appointment. Note: Our phone lines are not staffed on Saturdays during these events.
Eligibility & Cost
The Home Toxics Center is open to all Washtenaw County Residents and is not able to accommodate businesses and/or organizations, except for fertilizers and pesticides. If you need information or help to find disposal options, please contact us or visit our Business Recycling page.
The Home Toxics Center provides a free service to residents. Additional contributions go directly to our disposal costs as our program is not supported by tax dollars. Contributions can be made by cash, check, or virtually through PayPal through using the button below. While our building is closed, donations with debit or credit cards can also be made over the phone by calling Public Works at 734-222-6860.
Never drop-off toxic materials without a County employee to assist you. Leaving toxic materials outside the collection area fence or anywhere in the parking lot is illegal and strictly prohibited.
For all Weekday Drop-Offs, proceed directly to the back of the building. To participate in a Saturday Collection Event follow the posted signs to the back parking lot where staff will assist you.
Inclement Weather Notice
All appointments are subject to postponement due to inclement weather such as severe storms and wind, high heat, freezing temperatures, and more. Staff will notify appointments if we cannot serve you as planned. A closed Saturday Collection Event notification will be posted to the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commission home page and Facebook page. Please check online or call ahead if you are uncertain.
If you’re interested in keeping hazardous materials out of the environment, recycling, or public service, you’ll enjoy volunteering with us! Our Saturday Collection Events utilize volunteers to check in customers and remove materials from their vehicles. Volunteers help us run efficiently and smoothly. Snacks, protective equipment, and training are provided!
