Eligibility & Cost
The Home Toxics Center is open to all Washtenaw County Residents and is not able to accommodate businesses and/or organizations. If you need information or help to find disposal options, please contact us or visit our Business Recycling page.
The collection program is a free service for residents. We do accept donations, which go directly to the cost of disposal. Donations are important because our program is not supported by tax dollars. Donations can be made by cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and Apple Pay.
Weekday Drop-Off Appointments
Call the Home Toxics Center Hotline at 734-222-3950 to schedule a weekday drop-off appointment. Appointments are available Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. If a representative is not available to take your call, leave a voicemail. Under normal circumstances, your call will be returned in one business day.
While we may be able to accommodate you sooner, please allow 48 hours advance notice to schedule an appointment.
An appointment is not necessary, but guarantees staff are available to take your items, makes you our priority, and improves our efficiency. Unscheduled drop-offs will need to wait for staff assistance while residents with appointments are being helped.
Saturday Collection Events
Events are held the first three Saturdays of the month, April through November, 9 a.m. to noon, except for holiday weekends. Check the calendar below for up to date information.
Never drop-off toxic materials without a County employee to assist you. Leaving toxic materials outside the collection area fence or anywhere in the parking lot is strictly prohibited.
Weekday appointments are required to check in at the Office of the Water Resources Commissioner’s window. To reach this window, park in front of the building (leaving your materials in your vehicle), go through two sets of double doors, and turn to the right. Staff will check you in and direct you where to go.
To participate in a Saturday drop-off, follow the posted signs to the back parking lot where staff will assist you.
Inclement Weather Notice
All appointments are subject to postponement due to inclement weather such as severe storms and wind, high heat, freezing temperatures, and more. If you have an appointment, staff will notify you if we cannot serve you as planned. A closed Saturday collection notification will be posted to the Washtenaw County Water Resources Commission home page and Facebook page. Please check online or call ahead if you are uncertain.
If you're interested in keeping hazardous materials out of the environment, recycling, or public service, you'll enjoy volunteering with us! Our Saturday collections utilize volunteers to check in customers and remove materials from their vehicles. Volunteers help us run efficiently and smoothly. Snacks, protective equipment, and training are provided!
