Income Tax Assistance

Preparation and filing

Free income tax preparation is available!

Seniors can contact the University of Michigan Housing Bureau for Seniors (PDF) to schedule an appointment.

Households with annual income less than $56,000 should contact United Way of Washtenaw County for assistance. United Way also manages a list of other community partners providing income tax preparation that will be updated throughout tax season.

Homestead Property Tax Credit

This credit (up to $1,500) is available from the State for qualifying taxpayers that can be used to help pay property taxes. Even if you are not required to file income taxes, you may still be eligible for this credit. Any of the agencies above can help you file.

Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

This is a benefit for working people with low to moderate income. To qualify, you must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if you do not owe any tax or are not required to file. EITC reduces the amount of tax you owe and may give you a refund. The IRS has a tool you can use to check eligibility.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Issues

The University of Michigan Low Income Taxpayer Clinic can help low-income taxpayers with IRS issues including liens, levies, and audits.
