S.M.I.L.E. Program

Each year over one million marriages end in divorce in the United States. When divorce happens, people feel alone and wonder how anyone else lived through it. S.M.I.L.E (Start Making It Livable for Everyone) is a program for separating / divorced parents with minor children.

The developers of this program have worked with hundreds of divorcing families having difficulties with time-sharing, parenting roles, and other divorce-related issues. This program will provide some information about the effects of divorce and what parents can do to make the divorce situation livable.

As of March 2020, the "in-person" SMILE Program through the Washtenaw County Friend of the Court is not available.  We anticipate an “in-person” program starting up in late spring/early summer of 2023.

Currently there are four options to attend the SMILE program.

1). You may register for an online webinar conducted by the University of Michigan.  Click Here to visit the site and register. The upcoming dates for 2023 are: October 10th, November 14th, and December 12th.

2).  You may also register for the SMILE program through MiSDU, in the Mi-CASE portal. You will log on and find the link to SMILE.  You must remain in attendance for the entire program (they will send a pop-up to make sure you are actively watching) and if you complete the video, an email verifying your attendance will be sent to the Friend of Court.

3).  OnlineParentingPrograms.com, although this program has a fee.  You can select any online class that addresses the needs of your family dynamic.

4)  You can also attend the SMILE program via zoom through Oakland County Friend of the Court.  SMILE sessions are scheduled for the 2nd Monday of each month at 9:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.   The presentation will last approximately 1.5 hours, and will include the opportunity to ask questions.  There are no fees for the SMILE program.  The 2023 dates are:  January 9, February 13, March 13, April 10, May 8, June 12, July 10, August 14, September 11, October 9, November 13, and December 11.
